The article considers the content of the categories of «sustainability» and «sustainable development» of the industrial enterprises in the concept of the General theory of systems. The article considers factors affecting the sustainable development of the industry and identified principles which must be followed in solving the problem of sustainability in the development of the sectors of the national economic system.
